Blackhawks DENIED

The defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings beat the 'Hawks 6-4 in the New Year's Day Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Detroit got into some penalty trouble in the first period allowing the Blackhawks to skate to a 3-1 lead. But the Wings soon showed why they are such a storied franchise, taking control of the puck and the game in the final two periods scoring 5 unanswered goals. Blackhawks tallied one goal in the final period but it wasn't enough to lift them past the Wings. Blackhawks are young and talented but are still no match for the proven Red wings.

Attendance at the game was over 40,000, ample evidence that Midwesterners are some of the heartiest folks in the country.
