Bonehead with BB gun at HS gets school locked down

A local Aurora HS was locked down for five hours on Thursday when a couple of students were seen handling a BB gun. The Chicago Sun-Times reports a student who saw the gun reported it to school officials and all students were locked down in their first-hour classrooms as a precaution while an investigation ensued. The lockdown lasted five hours.

  2. Hey Trixie ASP--I changed my blog name to ozzierox--a combo & play-on the names of my two "kidz". Anyhoo--just wanted to comment on the school lock down. As you know, I work in the schools in a very rural county in Michigan. Last year we had several lock downs when some high school students phoned in fake bomb threats. Also, we occasionally have to lock down buildings when crazy parents make death threats against teachers, principals, etc. In fact, last week we had a big inservice on school violence given by a former U.S. Secret Service and FBI agent who gave us a lot of good information on how to handle Virginia-Tech and Colombine situations. Nice, huh? Nothing like Professional Development on how to handle a crazed gun man walking the halls of your elementary school. But--I now know what to do if that should happen! Two points that stick out in my mind--if you are ever face to face with a gun man (and it is usually a man), make eye-contact with him. It's much harder for shooters to shoot/kill someone they've made eye-contact with. Terrorists in the 70s in Greek airports put pillow cases over the heads of all their victims. Covering your face dehumanizes you and makes you easier to kill. Also, studies show that a man in a sport coat and tie without an ID badge can literally get away with murder. Nobody questions a guy in a coat and tie. Don't assume he is OK just because he's looking "professional" and legit. These guys get private info, as well as access to kids in school just by wearing a sport coat and tie!
And that concludes your lesson for today on critical incidence management.
